It normally takes me about 15 minutes to walk the length of it, although I am never in much of a hurry here. This is not a beach I want to charge through.
It has enough going on that it rewards slowing down: volleyball games, families setting up umbrellas, people wandering along the waterline, the occasional paddleboarder or swimmer, and the soft slap of calm Mediterranean water against the shore.
The main part of the beach is slightly raised above the waterline, with a manageable drop down to the thinner strip of sand between the sea and the sandbank.
That lower strip is one of my favourite parts of the walk.
In summer, especially around August, the upper sand can get properly hot. Not “slightly warm underfoot” hot. More like “why has the beach become a frying pan with branding?” hot
That is when I either keep flip-flops on across the dry sand or slip my shoes off and walk along the water’s edge, where the little waves wash over your feet and the whole beach suddenly feels gentler.
There is something quietly perfect about that part of Nova Icària: the city behind you, the sea brushing over your feet, the sand cooling under each step, and the volleyball nets busy just far enough away to become part of the background rhythm.

It depends what you want. Barceloneta is more famous and more energetic. Nova Icària is usually calmer, easiergoing, and often feels more local. If you want the iconic Barcelona beach, choose Barceloneta. If you want a softer city beach day, Nova Icària may suit you better.
