A Quiet Local Beach Escape Just North of Barcelona
Montgat is one of those beach places near Barcelona that feels much further away than it really is.
On paper, it is easy to explain. Montgat sits just north of Badalona, on the Maresme coast, with two useful Renfe/train stations: Montgat and Montgat Nord. You can reach it from Barcelona without needing a car, and the railway runs close enough to the beach that the sea feels like it is waiting just beyond the tracks.
But Montgat Beach is not really about the convenience.
It is about the feeling.
This is the local beach I choose when I want a proper relaxing beach day without travelling far. No camera. No filming plan. No “I need to capture this route before the light changes.” Just a towel, the Mediterranean, and that wonderful decision to do very little with some commitment.
Montgat is smaller, narrower and quieter than the big Barcelona beaches. It does not have the dense city-beach energy of Barceloneta, the young local buzz of Bogatell, or the resort-hotel backdrop of Santa Susanna and Malgrat de Mar.
It feels older.
More local.

You do not usually end up at Montgat by accident. You choose it.

That makes the experience feel more local. More intimate. More “people who know” than “people who followed the crowd.”
If Bogatell is the main event, Montgat is the quieter version you go to when you want the same kind of honest beach culture but with the volume softened and the edges made smaller.

The Beach I Choose When I Want to Relax
Montgat is one of the few beaches near Barcelona where I have spent many proper beach days beyond filming.
That says a lot.
When I am filming, I am working. I may be walking slowly, but the camera is always thinking. The light, the route, the crowd, the wind, the platform rules, the movement, the battery, the angle, the next section of beach.
At Montgat, when I am not filming, the beach lets me switch that off.
It is the place I would choose to put down a towel, get into the Mediterranean to cool off, come back out, sit for a while, then repeat the process until the day has done what it came to do.

For a first visit, I would usually suggest arriving at Montgat station rather than Montgat Nord.
Montgat station gives you the more traditional southern approach to the beach. It involves a little more walking, but the arrival feels easier, more natural and more forgiving.

Starting from the southern end gives you a better introduction to Montgat because the beach feels a little wider and more settled. You get the local town backdrop, the softer beach feel and the sense that you are arriving at a small coastal place rather than squeezing onto a narrow strip of sand beside rocks and railway lines.
The southern end also has more of a traditional beach feel.
Not Barcelona city beach.
Not a package-holiday resort.
More like chilled Badalona with an older, quieter voice.
There is a chiringuito at this end, and it is the more sensible area if you want to settle in without worrying too much about the tide reclaiming your patch of sand.
This is where I would start if I were taking someone to Montgat for the first time.
Let the beach introduce itself politely before showing them the wilder little quirks at the northern end.
Arriving from Montgat Nord Station
Montgat Nord station is almost on the beach, but there is a catch.
You arrive on the wrong side of the railway tracks; this is normal along the northern stretch.
The sea is close. You can feel it. You can almost hear it saying, “I am right here, but there is infrastructure in the way.”
As you leave Montgat Nord station, turn left and walk roughly a hundred yards down the road. You will find a path that takes you under the railway and out toward the beach, appearing on a rocky platform and the narrow northern stretch.
This access is very convenient, but the beach here can be quite narrow depending on the conditions.
In places, there may be barely enough dry sand for one towel before you hit wet sand. At low tide, it can be tempting to turn left and head further north, looking for an even quieter spot.
That can work.
But be careful.
As the tide comes in, some of that sand may disappear completely. You may find yourself gathering towels, bags, bottles, shoes and dignity while scrambling up the rocks to stay ahead of the water.
The Mediterranean does not care that you staked your claim earlier.
It knows you are only borrowing time there.
And the beach belongs to the sea.
The Narrow Beach Is Part of the Appeal
Montgat’s narrowness is not just a practical warning.
It is part of why the beach feels special.
On wide beaches, you can sometimes feel several rows removed from the water. You may be on the same beach, but emotionally, you are in the apartment three streets back from the coast.
Montgat is different.
Here, especially toward the northern end, every spot feels close to the sea.
You hear it more clearly.
You feel the breeze more directly.
You notice when the waterline changes.

Montgat is worth exploring beyond the beach.
It feels historic, old, slightly neglected in places, and full of charm.
The town sits close to the sea but does not feel like it exists purely for visitors. That gives it a different tone from the hotel-backed holiday towns further north or the heavily used city beaches to the south.
A slow walk in almost any direction can be relaxing.
You may find older streets, everyday shops, local cafés, buildings with character, small corners that feel half-forgotten, and views back toward the coast.
The church sits nicely in the background from parts of the beach, helping give Montgat that old-town feel.
